The weather has been fantastic. Plenty to see and do if you fancy a break in the area!

And winter came…

So regarding the previous post, it got very much colder than a paltry -10C. In some local gardens there were reports of -12C in the morning, over near Rudyard lake there was a rumour of -17C, and an unconfirmed as yet -20C near to the Winking Man pub. Blimey.

There has been a lot of snow as well. When the ploughs got through, the snow was banked up to over two metres on either side of Back Lane near to Longnor Wood. We are all getting about more easily now, though one or two back roads are pretty tricky.

In all this, the scenery and the sunrises (an especially good one with the newest of new moons and strikingly brilliant Venus) have been enough to take the breath away.

Winter Cometh

Well it really has been cold. Actually very cold would be a better description. The longnor.org site was reporting a healthy(!) -10C on Sunday evening just gone. We have had some snow today but generally we have escaped the worst this time round.

Autumn Colour

The leaves are turning – subtle shades are everywhere. There has been an abundancy of blackberries and rose-hips, and plenty of people have been out and about collecting the fruit in anticipation of warm puddings during the winter. There is still some pleasant weather to be had, although we have had our fair share of rain along with many other places…..

Early summer

Goodness it has been hot. Not much rain of late, but the wettish spell a few weeks back got everything in the garden and fields motoring along quite nicely. We have some availability over the summer holidays, so if you fancy a break in the Peak District/Staffordshire Moorlands, give us a call.

Greening Up….

We have had some rather chilly nights – but the days have been lovely and quite warm when the sun has got through the clouds. All around things are starting to green up – we have had our fill of the slightly brown tinge that was a remnant of the heavy snow and rather late-arriving spring. Swallows and House-Martins are on the wing – and if you are lucky (or know where to look) you’ll see and hear the skylarks. Wonderful!

Almost Spring

Well, we have had our fill of snow. However, despite some frosts, we are enjoying some lovely days of cloudless, clear blue skies. There are plenty of snowdrops about, and the daffodils are beginning to show through. And, as always seems to be the case at this time of year, the moles are playing havoc. Come and have a look for yourself…..

Wildlife

Well, the weather has been what you might call “changeable”, but actually we have had more better than wetter days overall. A good deal of warm sunshine, and when the sun has shone, it has been delightful. We have a lot of hawthorn blossom this year. It probably means something, but I’m just enjoying the spectacle.

We have some lovely walks around and about, and they are the ideal way to see and hear a regular summer visitor, the bird of the Staffordshire Moorlands, the Curlew. For those unfamiliar with the curlew, it has a haunting cry and can be seen soaring above the many fileds where it nests, often dealing with pesky crows. Have a listen to a curlew clip here, and again warning of said pesky crows here, with a babbling brook in the background. Our thanks to the local “Curlew Country” project for the sound clips, which they recorded locally. Enjoy.

With a bit of luck, you may also see Lapwings and Skylarks around and about…..
